What is bruxism?
Bruxism is the medical term for teeth clenching or grinding that can occur during the day or while patients are sleeping at night. Because bruxism is an unconscious reflex, most people are unaware of it happening. There are often underlying causes such as stress, anxiety, certain medications, or sleep apnea. When bruxism occurs over a long period of time, it can cause the associated muscles to become stronger and become sore from being overworked. As these muscles become stronger, the unwanted side effects of bruxism can get worse.
Common symptoms of bruxism:
- Jaw Pain
- Tension headaches
- Chipped, cracked or broken teeth
- Migraines
- Gum sensitivity
- Jaw muscle fatigue or sore muscles
What is Botox?
Botulinum toxin, or Botox, is an FDA approved natural protein used in many medical therapies. It is injected into muscles in small amounts and acts by weakening or paralyzing the treated muscles.
How can Botox help treat pain?
Botox is injected into muscles responsible for teeth grinding and clenching. The treatment relaxes these muscles to stop involuntary grinding and clenching of the teeth, reducing both muscle pain and tooth wear. Botox does not affect voluntary movements such as chewing, speaking or smiling.
To find out if you are a candidate for this procedure, an extensive examination and consultation will be performed to review the different treatment options available, such as nightguards, medication, heat application, stretching, or Botox.
Trained dentists in Virginia can use Botox in conjunction with other dental treatments for muscle and dental related pain. If you are interested in Botox for cosmetic reasons, we will be more than happy to provide you with a referral.
